Aquarium Magazines
The aquarium hobby is not static. There are always new things to learn. Whether it's a new fish being made available, the latest in filtration technology or how to better feed your goldfish, the best way to keep up with new developments in aquarium keeping is through magazines. I highly recommend subscribing to at least one of these and then reading it.
All of these suggestions cover coldwater and tropical fishes and invertebrates, and both freshwater and marine aquariums.
Subscriptions make fantastic gifts, too! Also visit our Fish Books pages
TROPICAL FISH HOBBYIST (TFH) The granddaddy of all aquarium magazines is still the best overall. It has information for all levels of aquarium hobbyists from beginner through novice and expert. Columns on Discus and Reefs (among other things) appeal more to the advanced aquarist.
AQUARIUM FISH INTERNATIONAL The new kid on the block, it's still a good all-around aquarium magazine. Recent editorial changes have made it even better. If you can afford only one, this is probably the best way to go. It's an excellent resource for beginners and novices. Tends to cover goldfish and ponds more than the other American magazines.
(formerly "Aquarium Fish Magazine")
FRESHWATER AND MARINE AQUARIUM (FAMA) I'm having trouble finding this magazine on bookstore magazine shelves lately. I don't know if this is a change in distributing or something else. Used to be the best magazine in the field (and the only one of these listed that's published an article by me). I'd like to recommend it on principle, but at the moment I'm unsure about where it's going.
Practical Fishkeeping is a British publication and the information is valuable on many counts. Rather expensive in the US (the link to the left will only allow subscription for US delivery), it's still a worthwhile publication. If you want a special gift for an aquarist, this is an excellent choice. I would not substitute this for one of the American magazines (at least for the American audience) but it's a treat to read. At least consider picking up a copy once in awhile at your local magazine rack.
