Cichlid References
The aquarium hobby is not static. There are always new things to learn. Whether it's a new fish being made available, the latest in filtration technology or how to better feed your fish, the best way to keep up with new developments in aquarium keeping is through magazines. I highly recommend subscribing to at least one of these, and then reading it.
They make fantastic gifts, too! More Cichlid Stuff
TROPICAL FISH HOBBYIST (TFH) The granddaddy of all aquarium magazines is still the best overall. It has information for all levels of aquarium hobbyists from beginner through novice and expert.
A relatively new book (2006). A good basic book showing the diversity of cichlids from around the world. Not completely comprehensive, but worth a look. AQUARIUM FISH The new kid on the block, it's still a good magazine. If you can afford only one, this is probably the best way to go. It's an excellent resource for beginners and novices. Tends to cover goldfish and ponds more than the other American magazines.
Dr Loiselle's book is the standard book on keeping cichlids of all kinds, at least as I'm concerned. Every cichlid lover should have a well-read copy. FRESHWATER AND MARINE AQUARIUM (FAMA) Recent editorial changes in this magazine have increased it's appeal for the less advanced aquarist. There are several long-running columns that are great for specialists. If you're a betta or discus enthusiast, this is the best of the general aquarium magazines.
The Cichlid Fishes is a great book on the behavior of cichlids and of fishes in general. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to go beyond the basics in understanding their fishes. Practical Fishkeeping is a British publication and the information is valuable on many counts. Rather expensive in the US (the link to the left will only allow subscription for US delivery), it's still a worthwhile publication. If you want a special gift for an aquarist, this is an excellent choice. I would not substitute this for one of the American magazines (at least for the American audience) but it's a treat to read.
